La Plata

Arrived in the La Plata, lovely tree lined streets. Irene is lending us her small apartment, near the center, just a few blocks from the cathedral.

I slept for an hour, when it was time to go to the concert Irene had invited me to. I really felt like feet of clay when I left for the concert, so exhausted, but the short walk started doing its magic. The choral concert was fabulous, very much a professional level, with all of the joy of a community group. They are about 22 women and 18 men, and sang a long program covering many styles. Irene´s solo was superb, very rich and delicate. At the end of the program the did several negro spirituals, with an excellent baritone lead.

Afterwards Irene drove us across town to a party for the group to celebrate the end of the season. At the risk of running out of superlatives, The home in La Plata was truly magnificent, perhaps an acre with large trees and a rich, green turf, with a cozy stucco and teca single story house in the middle. The entrance is to a beautiful covered patio with an attached kitchen area (where they made pizzas).

In between the patio and the house are various tables and recliners on either side of a stone walk, simply ideal for a gather of a few to dozens of people. Behind the house an swimming pool with brick walkways around, overlooked by a towering windmill water pump in excellent working condition. It is an excellent use of space in every way and a makes for a very relaxing atmosphere. The people there were even nicer, and the Argentine accent loads of fun to work through.

We have an invitation from the choral director at the cathedral for a tour of the towers...

  2. La Plata is the capital of the status of Buenos Aires, which also contains the city of Buenos Aires, which is the Federal District. La Plata is about an hour south of Buenos Aires. It has a university of 80,000 students, which is free for all entrants, including foreigners.
