Seeing things from the other side

Our friend Irene tried to convince us to take the bus to Buenos Aires, just over an hour north of La Plata, but we insisted on the train. The station in La Plata is very much in disrepair, and the trains very old. Irene advised us to try to find a car where the windows were not broken. We were happy just to end up with a seat, as the train was full.

Really this opened our eyes to a much more impoverished Argentina than we´d seen so far. The train is used by poorest, and goes through some rough, improvised barrios. Some towns just north of La Plata have large brick factory buildings which look like they have been abandoned for a decade or more. As we got closer to Buenos Aires, the prosperity of the areas visible from the train was higher, although still generally run down.
